Skip this mistakeBuying by acreage alone

Robot mowers are compelling because they trade one long mowing session for frequent automated trimming. The right machine depends heavily on yard geometry and navigation method—not just advertised acreage.

Boundary wire vs wire-free

Boundary-wire systems can be reliable once installed but require setup around the perimeter and obstacles. Wire-free models use combinations of RTK/GPS, cameras or other sensors and can be easier to reconfigure, but site conditions matter.

Check slope limits carefully

Manufacturers often specify maximum slope as a percentage or degrees. Compare that specification with the steepest section of your yard, not the average grade.

Think about trees and narrow passages

Dense tree cover, buildings and tight corridors can challenge some navigation systems. A beautiful open lawn is a much easier robot-mower environment than a segmented yard with many obstacles.

Charging location matters

The base station needs power and a location that satisfies the mower's installation requirements. Plan that before buying.
